Harvard University Program Day 3

Today we had more rain this morning so we couldn’t have our Harvard campus tour yet, but it looks like we will finally have blue skies tomorrow so tomorrow we will finally learn more about campus the buildings, and the history of Harvard. Our first lecture today was about homelessness at Harvard and causes of it. The causes of homelessness are not always so obvious and, we, sometimes, might have a very stereotypical view of homeless people though their reasons for being homeless might be extremely different from what we thought. On the flip side, even though someone might be homeless it doesn’t mean that they are not capable of escaping from their situation. In one case that we studied today, we learned about a boy who was homeless and had no family, but was able to enter Harvard through his hard work and effort. I think this is a very rare case, but it shows that by never giving up and always trying your hardest that it is possible to create a different and better life than what you have.

Our second lecture today was about beauty standards and gender roles. This was great for students to think about what is beautiful? and why do we think that he or she is beautiful based on social standards and popular culture. Of course, it is easy to understand how standards would vary country by country and how they wouldn’t always be the same. Gender roles also vary country by country, and thinking about why we have gender roles (and if they actually should be accepted or not) was very important for students to ponder. Especially like should women stay home and take care of the house and kids while men work? Is this still an acceptable gender role, or is it time for roles to evolve into something that is more fair and acceptable to everyone? These were some of the questions that students discussed in their second lecture today.
