English Report

Today we went to Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and spent the day out there visiting the Media Lab, getting a tour of the campus, and having an exciting lecture by Mr. Yoshida who is a researcher at the Media Lab. Just like Harvard, MIT is one of the world’s most renowned universities and is probably most famous for engineering and all science fields. However, the Sloan Business School is also extremely famous so MIT is also strong in economics, political science and linguistics.

First we visited the Media Lab and got a tour of the facilities and what it does. It wouldn’t be an exaggeration to say that the research carried out there changes the world and our lives, so I wish we had the chance to actually see some of the research there but that just isn’t possible as it is not open to the public. However, we were given some insight into it which was quite eye opening.

Afterwards we had a lecture by Yoshida San and what he researches as well as his background from high school all the way through entering the Media Lab. His background and interests had a huge impact on our students who are very interested in studying science and medicine, and the non-stop questions about what to study in high school and the path to university illustrated how excited (and nervous?!) they are about their future.

In the evening we had a dinner reception with Japanese students studying in the Boston area at a variety of universities, and our students had a great time asking about the exchange students’ backgrounds and reasons for studying in the United States. They were further able to understand differences between Japanese universities (as some students did have experience at them as well) and American universities. It was very nice of the exchange students to share their time with us and make our students more informed about university options.
