SGH Program of Super Global High School : Study Tour at Lake Akan

We had a field trip to Lake Akan in Hokkaido from the 7th to 9th of August to deepen our understanding of the Ainu studies we had in June.
We walked around a forest, remembered Ainu had hunted and harvested in this forest, and felt the abundant and welcoming nature under the cooperation of Mr. Niida of General Incorporated Foundation Maeda Ippoen financial group who manage the forest around Lake Akan. (Ainu didn’t live in the forest around Lake Akan but some native bushes still remain there.)
Mr. Akibe of Ainu Akan Kotan explained some unique stories about the origin of Akan Kotan and Ainu from a perspective of “sightseeing” and from that we could understand Ainu culture from different standpoints.
Although we stayed there only for 2 nights, we had a study meeting for 2 hours every night and deepened our understanding while we exchanged our opinions and discussed how we can solve a problem.

Comments from students :
“We are learning “for multicultural coexisting” but I thought what we need for multicultural coexisting is what we need for our human relationships.”
“We learned new things and at the same time realized there are many things we don’t know still. I went to Ainu Kotan for the first time and I understood how we can overcome the problems between multicultural coexisting, ethnocentrism, and cultural relativism through being exposed to different values. ”
