SGH　Tourism Development ・ Joint High School and University Project II

　For the second round of our joint high school and university project, we invited Professor Takeshi Kawahara from the Regional Studies Research Department at Ritsumeikan University. Professor Kawahara’s research focus is on regional tourism, especially the dynamics of fishing villages and their houses.

　We were taught to think about tourism from the perspective of regional research. As an example, it was courteously explained to us about the history of of Heshiko Cho being established in Mikata Gun, Mihama Cho in Fukui Prefecture. From merely sunbathing on the beach as the main sightseeing to eating fresh seafood from the sea to the forefront of sightseeing, we learned how the history of beach tourism is changing. Additionally, this made me think about what kind of field work is necessary for when I go to Sakhalin. I also learned the importance of the original source of information is vital as are the pictures, and so taking pictures on the Sakhalin Trip will play a very important role in my research.

　Tourism resources are changing with the times, and, now, it is important for students to understand the depth and necessity of regional studies in order to find new ways for regional areas to stand out.
