SGH Study Tour in Thailand 2016

In order to deepen our understanding of many cultures of Aia and multiculturalism,we underwent a training program in Phayao, Thailand from September 21st to the 26th.

The YMCA Phayao Center in northern Vietnam is a main place for activities in the area. The center’s activities deal in the grappling with human trafficking. One can get a good grasp of the problem here. Also, last year we experienced homestays in a mountain village in the area, but this year, from a different perspective, we experienced the agricultural life of the plains. Our goal was to learn how the Thai people in the plains lived their lives and how children of our age become educated.

Our schedule is below.

9/21Travel(Shin-Chitose Airport→Bangkok→Cheng Lai→Phayao)
9/22Activities at the Center: Study and culture exchange with the youth
9/23Culture exchange at the nearby high school
Farmstay: Spending time with host families, discussion
9/24Farmstay: Spending time with host families
Activities at the Center: Discussions with children, exchange
9/25Activities at the Center: General activities with staff
Travel(Phayao→Cheng Lai→Bangkok)
9/26Travel(Bangkok→Shin-Chitose Airport)

It was a short trip of four days, but we learned the significance of the center and farmstay, and we learned about the conditions that high schoolers are part of. Furthermore, we realized that our points of view and ways of thinking were only one aspect, and we’ve recognized that it’s necessary to have more perspectives about multiculturalism. After we return, we want to investigate further through studies about how to learn about diversity.
